The Sussex Sign Company is celebrating 30 years in business in 2025.
The Sussex Sign Company, established on January 1, 1995, by Norman Mayhew and Peter Lake, has grown into a powerhouse in the UK signage industry. Starting as a family-run partnership, the company set out with a clear mission 30 years ago: to enhance businesses’ visual identities and help them stand out in competitive markets. Under the leadership of Norman Mayhew, the business has continuously evolved, achieving significant milestones and earning widespread recognition. Peter Lake retired in 2007, leaving a legacy of strong foundational contributions that continue to shape the company’s ethos today.
Strong company growth and a dedication to quality, innovation and customer service for 30 years
In 2003, The Sussex Sign Company was incorporated as a private limited company, marking a new chapter in its growth. From modest beginnings, the company now operates out of a 4,000-square-foot design and manufacturing hub in Portslade. The hub is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and an exceptional team of professionals. This expansion reflects the company’s dedication to quality, customer service, and innovation.
Multi-award-winning company
The Sussex Sign Company has received numerous prestigious accolades over the years, solidifying its reputation for excellence. These include Sussex Small Business of the Year, FSB Southern Region Small Business Champion, Newhaven Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, The Brighton and Hove Independent Business Awards’ Manufacturing Company of the Year, and most recently, the UK Graphic Awards’ Best Large-Scale Roll Out in 2024—an honour often regarded as the Oscars of the UK graphics industry.
Committed to employee training and maintaining high standards in the industry.
Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to health and safety, The Sussex Sign Company has achieved Constructionline Gold accreditation, underscoring its adherence to rigorous industry standards. Beyond accolades, the company takes immense pride in its role as a training champion within the industry. Over the years, more than 15 team members have achieved their NVQs in sign making, with the most recent apprentice earning a distinction—a testament to the company’s dedication to nurturing talent and fostering professional growth.
Strong company ethos
Many former employees have gone on to achieve remarkable success, inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of Managing Director Norman Mayhew. Among them, one long-serving team member, who spent 18 years with the company before departing post-COVID, has become the Managing Director of The British Sign and Graphics Association. These success stories reflect the company’s ethos of supporting individual growth and professional development.
New growth for 2025
Despite its impressive legacy, The Sussex Sign Company remains ambitious and forward-thinking. Currently, the company is constructing a new state-of-the-art vehicle wrapping centre in Burgess Hill. Set to become the Centre of Excellence for vehicle wrapping and fleet graphics in Sussex, this facility embodies the company’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its leadership position in the signage industry.
30 years of community and charitable support
As The Sussex Sign Company celebrates its 30th anniversary, it continues to prioritise quality, customer service, and community engagement. Supporting charitable organisations such as Guide Dogs for the Blind, Children’s Respite Trust, Lifeboats, WOLO, and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity demonstrates the company’s dedication to giving back. Looking ahead, The Sussex Sign Company remains focused on pushing boundaries, embracing new technologies, and maintaining its role as a trusted partner for businesses across the UK. With its rich history and unwavering commitment to excellence, The Sussex Sign Company is poised to lead the signage industry for many more decades to come.
